Car leather interior care

Car leather interior maintenance is not always so easy. The condition of the leather and the intensity of its use are important.

Car leather care is like caring for our hands, it must be done regularly and especially in cold weather. The effects of temperature and humidity, as well as the frequency of leather care, are factors that determine the duration of operation and, accordingly, comfort.

The leather interior of any new car, especially pale leather, is recommended to be treated with leather protection products before use. In this way, you can extend the life of the leather and avoid the following minor injuries: paint from jeans getting into the pores of the leather, or minor scratches and abrasions when getting in or out of the car.

Various cleaning agents are used to clean and maintain the leather surfaces of new cars (up to 3 years) and used cars. In the first three years, new leather must be cleaned with a very gentle cleansing foam and the leather must be treated with a protective agent.

The maintenance of the leather interior of a car over three years old requires deep cleaning of the leather surfaces to remove dirt from the leather pores. After that, moisturizers with a higher fat content and antioxidant level should be used. If the driver’s seat has visible signs of wear after three years of use, such signs of wear can be prevented. The skin must be cared for in a timely manner.

Car leather interior maintenance must be carried out with special tools. Professional products for cleaning and care of leather surfaces can be found here.

Important to know! The driver seat must be cleaned every 2-3 months, other surfaces every 6-12 months. Also, don’t forget the metal parts of your clothing, such as rivets, zippers and buckles on your jeans, that scratch your leather.

Leather cleansing

Cleansing the leather- simply wiping with a damp cloth and creaming is definitely not enough.

Car leather interior care removes dust, sand and grease accumulated between the seams and folds of the seats. Dirt accumulated in the seams and pores can damage the dyed leather surface, sewing threads, and chafing can also occur under heavy load.

Manufacturers recommend vacuuming the seam every week, but no less than once a month. Dirt often sticks quite strongly to the seams, and it is quite difficult to remove it with a vacuum cleaner. In such cases, it is wise to use a toothbrush and then clean with a vacuum cleaner. Of course, everything depends on the intensity of the car’s use.

Foam is used for delicate and at the same time intensive cleansing of the leather. It does not create excess moisture, which is harmful to leather seats, as it accelerates the drying of the leather. You’ve probably seen seats with stretched leather, a good example of the wrong way to clean leather. After cleaning, the leather should be wiped dry and let the moisture evaporate. Only then can you sit on the leather seat.

Important! Leather seats can only be lightly moistened, they must not be wet with water!

Leather care

There is a rule when caring for a leather interior – better more often and less than intensively and rarely!

Car leather interior maintenance is generally divided into two parts – intensive cleaning and protective cream treatment. It is important not only to clean the surface, but also to clean the pores, because dirt accumulates there and does not give the leather a chance to breathe and be elastic.

If the care of the leather interior of the car is carried out rarely, but intensively, it will bring more harm than good. Scratches, abrasions and cracks on the folds may appear on the leather of the seats, which in turn require restoration of the leather. There is also a risk of washing off the top coat that protects the skin color.

If you often ride on leather seats with pets or children who love to climb on the seats with their feet, then leather care is very important and it is recommended to impregnate the leather cover with a special product or cover the leather with ceramics in addition to the cream. This makes further cleaning more convenient and the leather acquires a water-repellent effect that lasts for 3 to 6 months.

Did you know? If the leather seats crunching after maintenance, a cream containing beeswax was used. We recommend that you contact specialists to remove the crunching!

Caring for a leather steering wheel

The leather-covered steering wheel and gear knob are the leather parts in the car that need the most care.

The steering wheel and gear knob receive the greatest load. Sweat and fat are released from the hands, which are absorbed into the pores of the leather mounted on the steering wheel. The biggest enemy of the steering wheel leather is fuel particles (especially diesel fuel) that can get on the steering wheel after refueling.

The leather cover of the steering wheel oxidizes and the paint begins to peel off, the leather surface becomes sticky. All this can be avoided by periodically performing skin care.
If the surface of the steering wheel begins to shine, this is the first sign that you need to schedule cleaning and maintenance. Unfortunately, no tool can make the leather new, and if the desired result is not achieved with the care tools, the steering wheel can always be renewed, painted or re-leathered.

Important to know! If the surface of the steering wheel becomes sticky and traces of paint remain on the cleaning cloth during cleaning, it is necessary to immediately use means that remove fatty substances from the leather and a special cream that partially restores the surface of the leather.

Leather ceramics

Ceramics and long-term protection products developed for the protection of leather surfaces are the most permanent and effective protection products that can be installed on car leather surfaces. Interiors of cars finished with pale leather are most at risk, as dirt is very visible on their surface. The most common problem is the so-called denim blue seeping into the leather color. It is often not possible to remove this type of dirt with traditional leather care.

Ceramic protection products have been developed for this purpose, which ensure permanent hydration of the leather surface and at the same time provide a strong protective layer that prevents dirt from being absorbed into the leather. If the surfaces even get dirty, ceramic-covered seats are much easier to clean in the future.

Leather ceramics or long-term protection is recommended to be installed immediately on the leather surfaces of a new car. In the case of a used car, the car’s leather interior must be maintained as preliminary work, then a protective layer can be applied. We only install leather protection products from well-known and proven manufacturers, such as CarPro, Gyeon and Colourlock – we also sell these products for self-installation, see here.

Good to know ! Ceramic protection does not guarantee that no more dirt will seep into the leather surfaces, but they significantly reduce the possibility of dirt corrosion.

Detailing is a complex of car cosmetic services, which includes washing, dry cleaning of the cabin, polishing of the body, coating of the body with protective compounds and much more.
