Car salon leather interior care

Leather Interior Care Tips

Leather interior care is contingent upon the condition of the leather and the frequency of its usage in a car salon.

Leather seats require regular care, much like our hands. Cold and moisture significantly affect the condition and lifespan of leather.

We recommend treating every new car’s leather interior, especially light-coloured leather, with appropriate leather protectants before use. This helps protect the seats from damage and staining, such as colour transfer from denim and scratches or abrasions from sitting in or exiting the car.

There are certain differences in cleaning new (up to 3 years old) and used car interiors. For instance, with new cars, only gentle cleaning foam and protectants should be used during the first three years. For older vehicles, it’s necessary to perform a thorough clean of the leather pores, favouring creams with higher fat content and antioxidants. Signs of wear usually appear on the driver’s seat after three years of use and can be avoided by timely and regular leather care.

Important! The driver’s seat should be cleaned every 2-3 months, other surfaces every 6-12 months. Pay attention to your clothing as well: new denim jeans may stain your light-coloured car seats, and metal parts of clothing (zippers, rivets, buckles) can scratch the leather.

Key considerations for maintaining leather interiors:

  • Before cleaning, consider the type of dirt and the type of leather in your interior. Leather can have a porous surface or closed pores, i.e., smooth leather. Assess whether the dirt is ordinary grime or a tougher stain like oil, etc.
  • When choosing a cleaning agent, always start with the mildest one. Strong chemicals can damage the leather colour and cause blotches. If the mild cleaner doesn’t work, gradually move to a stronger cleaning agent.
  • Test the compatibility of the cleaning agent with the leather beforehand by trying to clean a small, inconspicuous area (e.g., bottom side). Dry the cleaned spot with cool air from a hairdryer. If the agent reacts poorly with the leather and leaves a stain, consult a specialist.
  • For water-sensitive leather (aniline leather), it should be cleaned cautiously with minimal water. Apply cleaning agents evenly to avoid stains and spots.
